10 Sesame Street Scenes I Miss the Most

Can anybody tell me how to get, how to get back to Sesame Street?

“Sunny day, sweeping the clouds away. On my way to where the air is sweet! Can you tell me how to get, how to get to...”

Ah, Sesame Street! Who doesn't miss Sesame Street, or at least, Sesame Street days? As a treat for my nostalgic old self, I collected my favorite Sesame Street scenes. Then, I thought I'd share them with you!

Here are the 10 Sesame Street Scenes I Miss the Most:

Oscar's "I Love Trash"

“Oh, I love trash! Anything dirty, or dingy, or dusty...” This was my favorite song when I was a kid. This unlikely love song proves that Oscar, indeed, has a heart after all! To sing along with Oscar, click here for the lyrics.

Pinball 12

I'm sure you remember this one: A little red pinball goes through all sorts of holes and slides and mazes. “Onetwothree - four - five. Sixseveneight - nine - ten. Eleven, twelve...” I'm sure you remember this one!

Luis Looks For The Exit

I don't exactly understand the appeal of this scene, but I like it, so there.

How Cheese is Made

This one is really nice! Unsentimental, but educational and informative. When I was a kid, I tried to follow the process that I saw on Sesame Street, thinking I could make cheese too - but I guess running a fork through milk wasn't quite all that was needed to make cheese after all.

Ernie's "Dance Myself to Sleep"

“Sometimes, I have trouble falling asleep - but it's not so bad: I don't worry, and I don't weep. In fact, I'm glad…”

Ernie can't sleep again, and instead of counting sheep, he has a song-and-dance number with them! Sing with Ernie; click here for the words to this song.

Lowercase N

Very haunting melody. If you've seen it, I don't need to explain why it's so memorable. If you haven't - words wouldn't help you understand. Watch the video. For those who want to sing along, click here for the lyrics.

Red Ball 1, 2, 3

The appeal of this one is similar to the pinball 12 scene - a little red ball falling through hoops, making things spin, sliding down paths, going through tubes, etc. - except this one is REAL, not cartoon! Then, of course, there's the cherry-topped ice cream at the end. Yum!

Ernie's "I Don't Want To Live On The Moon"

“Oh, I'd like to visit the moon in a rocket ship high in the air. Yes, I'd like to visit the moon; but I don't think I'd like to live there…”

Ernie explains how he'd like to visit the moon, the bottom of the ocean, the jungle - even go back in time! But he adds that no matter how wonderful these places may be, he would still come home to his friends and loved ones.

“Every time I look down on the Earth from above, I would miss all the places and people I love…”

A sentimental masterpiece, in my humble opinion.

To sing along with Ernie, find the lyrics here.

What's the Name of That Song?

This clip got me humming for three days, mentally fidgeting and trying to figure out: “What is the name of that doggone song?” Take that as a warning.

Though still I can't give you the name of that song, I can give you its lyrics: Click here.

Most Heartbreaking Episode: I'm Gonna Miss You, Mr. Hooper

Arguably the most memorable, most heartbreaking episode of Sesame Street: Big Bird is waiting for Mr. Hooper to come back so he can give Mr. Hooper the picture he drew. The grown-ups explain with difficulty to Big Bird why Mr. Hooper is never coming back: He's dead.

When Big Bird finally understands, he says his characteristic goodbye: “I'm gonna miss you, Mr. Hooper.”

And I miss you, Sesame Street.

I remember watching quite a few of these scenes when my oldest daughter was a toddler some twenty years ago. Thanks for the nostalgic visit back to the Sesame Street of those times.

Beatrice, this was a great walk down memory lane. Sesame Street started when my first child was three. I sat with her every morning and we watched together. We sang the songs, answered the questions and loved every minute of it. Later, I watched reruns with my two younger children and never stopped enjoying the subtle teachings that so delighted young children.
My favorite song was the Mahna Mahna song. I sang it until family members were ready to clobber me...and the words were easy to remember too.

There were two scenes that I really enjoyed and would like to find. I believe they were part of sesame street or some other PBS childrens show.

The first one involved a kid who starts out riding a bicycle, and then goes on what appears to be an LSD trip...
The other involved a wish machine that turned you into whatever you wished for.

Any help?

Nice list: good pull!
One that's missing that I truly loved was the aliens that landed and met the telephone, thinking it was a cow, chicken, etc.

These are wonderful. My favorites that aren't here are Teenie Little Super Guy and Big & Little ("Big plays the tuba, Little the fiddle"). Anyone know of a site that collects Mr. Rogers' opera scenes? My daughter (now an expectant mom) & I used to love those, too.

Steve, commenter #8, type "Mr. Roger's videos" into your google search engine and you will find any number of videos. Enjoy, and good luck with the baby.
Good job, Beatrice. How do you put one of these productions together?

Thanks for all your kind words. I know this list is far from complete, I just put in the scenes I miss the MOST :) But there are definitely plenty of Sesame Street scenes we would all love to see again. Perhaps, one of you should make a Part 2 with my blessings!

Judy, I'm not sure if your questions was rhetorical, but in case it wasn't, I simply type in the info I want here, research the video locations and include them in the article, and the editing staff does everything from there. Even the pictures did not come from me. Hope that answered your question!

What a fantastic job. My little ones and I are watching these video clips instead of TV.
Wonderful!

A loafa bread, a container of milk, and a sticka butta.

You know, mlostracco, I really thought about adding that one, but I wasn't sure anybody else would remember it! LOL

My favorite was another Ernie and Bert skit where he's trying to get to sleep and he counts fire engines instead of sheep.

Hillarious!

This is lovely Beatrice. Now I\'m really feeling nostalgic! I loved Sesame Street as a child and still do now. Does anyone know the name of the song, and the lyrics, that went, \"It\'s a rai-ny day, it\'s a rainy day/ It\'s raining outside so I can\'t go out and play/ Why do I love the rain/anyway? Or perhaps you could tell me where to find \'em, so I can sing it to my kids!
