Deanna Troi of Star Trek, The Next Generation is a role model. Originally on the planet Betazed, she is half human and half Betazoid. Her mother is Ambassador Lwaxana Troi, her father, Lt. Ian Andrew Troi, who is deceased, served in Starfleet. She is the ship's counselor on the Enterprise with an advanced degree in Psychology. Because she is half Betazoid she is also partially telepathic and is an extra-sensory empath with clairsentience. She can read what other people are feeling.
She is often at Jean Luc Picard's side, helping him with communication, and just there to help if he needs someone to talk to. That is often her role.
Deanna has been tested with her skills as a psychologist and as a Bridge Officer. One time she completely lost all her Betazoid traits while on a mission and she questioned her ability without those traits, but she is good at what she does with or without those traits. She was also questioned about her ability to command a ship should anything happen, and she proved herself successful at that. She then decided it was best to get more training in this field as did Beverly Crusher.
Because of an alien entity, she also became a mother. Because the alien was endangering the crew of the Enterprise, the entity chose to end its life. She was very heart broken because Deanna had given birth to the child, and it felt in every way her very own.
Troi also had a romantic interlude with Will Riker. In the end, he does get his girl. She also had romantic feelings for Worf. She often accompanies them on Away Missions along with Tasha Yar, Beverly Crusher, Georgi Laforge, and Data.
Troi uses her gifts and works toward her own potential. Always fine tuning.
