Data of Star Trek, the Next Generation is a role model. True, he is not considered the normal role model, because he is an android, and not human, but he wants to be human, just as Pinocchio wanted to be a real boy. Dr. Noonien Soong who is known created him for his work of the positronic brain.
After Data was found Omicron Theta by a Starfleet ship, he decides to attend Starfleet Academy. He was assigned to the Enterprise to serve under Jean Luc Picard as second in command. He becomes very good friends with Georgi Laforge, Tasha Yar, who he has a brief affair with, Beverly and Wesley Crusher, Worf, Deanna Troi and Will Riker.
Data proves he can be more than trusted when his brother, Lore, comes aboard and decides to give the Crystalline Entity the Enterprise-D. Data stops him with Wesley's help. He trusts Beverly Crusher with knowledge of his on and off switch.
Data wants to understand emotion and wants to cry and sneeze and get angry like everyone else. He receives an emotion chip and tries it, at first it does not work out. He does try it again after some work later. He wants to try many human things in order to understand humans more.
Data, at one point in his life has to stand up to Starfleet to be counted as a human life form and not as a machine, which Starfleet can do with what they wish. He and Picard fight this in court because they believe Data has rights. Data does win. He also builds a daughter, although she does not survive.
He has a pet cat whom he named Spot. He writes a poem about Spot with his curiosity of poetry. He tries painting. He and Laforge spend time as Sherlock Holmes and Watson on the holodeck.
Data does everything he can to be human, and in many ways is more human than most individuals are. In the end, he is willing to give up his life, which shows he is most human of all.
