John Erhard Winchester, father of Dean and Sam in the television series, Supernatural, is a role model. He gave his life to fighting demons after one in Sam's bedroom killed his wife when Sam was 6 months old. John served as a Marine, so it was only natural for him to fight demons after the traumatic death of his wife. He trained his sons to go after demons just like him. He hunted down people who killed demons and learned from them. The one thing he did do was protect his boys. John would risk everything to keep his boys safe. He would give his life.
As a father, John is not the best role model. Most of his life after his wife Mary was killed by the demon; he was chasing demons more than being a father. For him, as Sam would call it, it was an obsession. Dean spent more time with Sam growing up, than his father did with them. Dean watched out for his brother. Dean learned from his father to be a good soldier.
Sam was at odds with his father when Sam decided he wanted to go to college instead of being a hunter and fighting demons. Sam is more like his father in the way he feels about things. Sam is as stubborn as his father.
John passed down is 1967 Impala to his son Dean more than likely because at the time Dean was hunting with his father, following in the family way so to speak.
He is a soldier through and through. He wants to protect people from the same kind of pain he went through and stop the demon that killed his wife. It is his mission. He keeps fighting up until the very end.
