Stargate Command on Earth is made up of military personnel, scientists, medics, and archeologists of many nations. Here's a guide for keeping the humans of the base straight as you walk through the series.
Jack O'Neill, USAF
- First Appearance: Pilot (Children of the Gods)
- Rank: Colonel, later Brigadier General, later Major General
Colonel Jack O'Neill was a member of the original Stargate expedition team to the planet Abydos in the Stargate movie, taking the mission in hopes it was a suicide mission. After the recent death of his son Charlie and his subsequent divorce, O'Neill traveled to Abydos where he helped free the people of the planet from the Goa'uld Ra.
After some time, O'Neill was called out of retirement by General George Hammond after the Goa'uld Apophis came through the stargate to Earth. After traveling back to Abydos and finding that the stargate could travel to hundreds of locations, he was given command of the newly-formed SG-1 and sent to the planet Chulak in an attempt to save captured Abydonians.
Though this mission failed, SG-1 continued to explore new worlds under Jack O'Neill. He has proved to be a highly competent leader and highly effective soldier. O'Neill was the first to personally meet the alien Asgard, who would become a major ally of Earth, and has forged a personal friendship with the Asgard Supreme Commander, Thor. Thor has, on multiple occasions, called for O'Neill personally to assist the Asgard, and has come to O'Neill's rescue many times.
O'Neill has twice has the Library of Knowledge of the Ancients downloaded into his mind, the second time helping to uncover weapons capable of defending Earth from the immanent assault of the Goa'uld Anubis. The knowledge of the Ancients also helped to create weapons capable of defeating the Replicators and led to the discovery of the Lost City of Atlantis. O'Neill has also been seen to have the Ancient Technology Activation gene, using Ancient weapons and ships on multiple occasions.
In Season 8, O'Neill is promoted and takes command of the SGC. He retains this post for only one season, when he then is promoted to Major General and is given control over the Department of Homeworld Security. He returns to the SGC on multiple occasions and visits Atlantis at least once during his tenure as Director of Homeworld Security.
Samantha Carter, USFA
- First Appearance: Pilot (Children of the Gods)
- Rank: Captain, later Major, Lt. Colonel, Colonel
Captain Samantha Carter was assigned to SG-1 for the mission to Abydos. Though Jack O'Neill initially took a dislike to her, she eventually became one of his best friends and most trusted colleagues.
Sam Carter remained a part of SG-1 for eight seasons, taking command on multiple occasions when Jack O'Neill was unable to do so for various reasons. She is one of the people who figured out how to make the stargate work, and is one of the brightest people in Stargate Command. She helps to maintain the working condition of the gate and the entire base computer system.
Carter has been taken over by alien entities on multiple occasions, including the possession of her body by a cybernetic organism which had tried to infest the base's computers and the taking of her body as a host by the Tok'ra Jolinar. This possession left her with the ability to use Goa'uld genetic technology, which she has used to heal and to destroy.
Carter as given total command of SG-1 in Season 8 when O'Neill took command of the SGC, but left the team to pursue research at Area 51 when O'Neill left the SGC, but rejoined Cameron Mitchell's team shortly after. After a two-year return to SG-1, Carter was promoted to Colonel and was given command of the Atlantis Expedition.
Daniel Jackson, PhD
- First Appearance: Pilot (Children of the Gods)
- Rank: N/A
Daniel Jackson was chosen for the original Stargate mission due to his ability to speak a number of dead languages and his theories on the origins of various historic landmarks on Earth like the pyramids. After the original mission, he chose to remain on Abydos with his new wife, Sha're.
Jackson joined SG-1 when Sha're was kidnapped by Apophis, with the intent of finding her and returning to Abydos within a year. This plan did not pan out, and Jackson became the resident linguist and peacemaker of the team.
Though Jackson was not military and was not a major proponent of Jack O'Neill's “shoot first” mentality, he soon became a fighter for the SGC. He has been seen on multiple occasions using the choice weapon of SG-1, the P-90, with great effect and realizes the evil of the Goa'uld and Ori, both of whom he chose to fight to the death.
