With this week's cliff-hanging episode showing the current Doctor (David Tenant) seemingly regenerating, after a Deadly Dalek shot him, the sci-fi world is awash with names and ideas surrounding the fate of the character and who may take over the role when current leading man tenant steps down.
David Tennant has been the Doctor for three seasons now, this may be a swerve by the shows creators to keep viewers on the edge of their seat, but if it is indeed a regeneration and new leading man taking over the role there have been a few names bandied about. Fellow Scot Robert Carlyle seems front-runner, with other names such as Alan Davies, John Simm and even former Buffy actor Anthony Head mentioned. All will be clear this Saturday when the season finale airs, such secrecy surrounds the episode that no review tapes have been issued and no one is letting any information slip through about the Doctors fate.
With a Christmas special featuring the Cybermen in the pipeline and sporadic episodes through 2009, until a proper series in 2010, it seems as if the character will live on the only question is who will fill his shoes.
