If you haven't heard yet, media outlets like M&C and E! Hollywood are reporting that American Idol ratings are down. It's a trend that started a couple of seasons ago, but, hit an all-time high during the current one. As a result, producers are scrambling for ways to improve the show and attract more viewers.
“So, what happened?”
THE ANSWERS:
“The format never really changed.”
By allowing contestants to use instruments, the American Idol producers thought the format of the show would “look” and “feel” different. However, since very few of the singers are actually taking advantage of this new opportunity, the show is virtually unchanged. This incident actually breaks a big myth. It is the one about “great singers” also being “great instrument-players.” Truthfully, if one is done well, the other most likely isn't.
“The singers are suffering from the flu.”
In season seven, several singers on American Idol have the flu. As a result, their vocals are strained and lacking in power. This translates into dull performances and safe song choices. Sadly, since it takes a lot of rest and relaxation for the human body to overcome the flu, completely, it'll be a challenge for the American Idol singers to snap back quickly and give us their best. Be prepared for more rocky performances.
“The judging is too predictable.”
For the first six seasons, waiting for the judges to comment on performances was a big reason for watching the show. However, now, it's all too predictable. We know Randy will think most of the singers are “just all right.” Paula will “love” most of anything and, if she doesn't, she'll compliment the singer's outfit or hair. Then Simon will “hate” almost everything. It's time for a change. Maybe, we need a new judge.
“Other shows are just as competitive.”
Other shows are battling back against the American Idol monster. Oprah and other evening TV hits are taking viewers from it. People have a choice and they are exercising it. Therefore, American Idol will have to stay fresh and relevant in order to keep people watching.
In conclusion, even with the loss of viewers, American Idol is still a tv rating's giant. It's estimated that at least 30 million people watch each night. Producers' main concern will be keeping viewers in order to maintain advertising and marketing dollars. Hopefully they'll be able to turn things around and turn season 7 into a rating's wonder.
