10 Reasons MTV Should be Taken Off the Air

Not that VH1 is better, but it'd be nice to have good music television.

MTV is everything that is wrong with the world.

1. It's Entirely Geared Toward Selling Stuff.

There's nothing wrong with marketing a product, but if you're network broadcasts “music” don't force-feed me sunglasses and Sprite.

2. It Encourages People to be Retarded.

The mook and midriff mentality of Hollywood is its most polarized on MTV; Tom Green is not a role model.

3. There Aren't Any Videos.

TRL does not count. It's like how Comedy Central used to run nothing but stand up and now stand up's only on Fridays - only Comedy Central is still funny.

4. The Programming Doesn't Include Anything Music Related.

At some point someone was watching MTV's summer programming and said, “You know, I like watching all these teens and twenty-somethings acting cool, but all this music is getting in the way. Can we just tape people "dating" each other?”

5. The Real-World Isn't.

And if you think it is, I'm sorry.

6. Jackass is pretty entertaining.

7. Girls Will Watch “Super Sweet 16” and Think That It's Acceptable Behavior.

It's possible that the person that came up with the idea for this show has a finely tuned sense of irony; the concept of filming kids act like idiots - while straight faced believing that they are the ish - is actually pretty good. But the people that watch trashy television aren't smart enough to pick up on subtle referential nuances. Somewhere, a ten-year-old girl is asking her dad for a ninety thousand dollar Mercedes.

8. “Cribs” is a Motivator for Aspiring Artists to Sell Out.

If you didn't catch the fifteen minutes of music that aired earlier it's OK: the gist of the message is really the persona of the artist. What kinds of stuff do they have? That's what's important, right?

9. It's a Network of Old People Pulling the Puppet Strings of Young Hosts.

Do you think the people that are making money on this network actually have anything in common with the people they are exploiting? Nuh uh.

10. It Ruined Britney.

This in of itself isn't that bad, but the collateral damage includes giving that YouTube douche bag a ticket to his fifteen minutes of fame.

11. It Ruined Music.

I know that's eleven, but I figured it deserves a spot. Instead of promoting art, MTV has regulated that everything you hear on the radio is pop-mediocrity. Everyone that listens to MTV is being taught to be average.
