The Demise of the Series, Tru Calling

Tru Calling started out as an interesting story. It had an excellent team of actors, but other things caused this series to fail.

Tru Calling is an American Television series, which ran from October 30, 2003 until April 21, 2005 on the Fox Network. It started out as an excellent story, but as it continued, although it had a very long hiatus, how could this story possibly go on?

Jon Harmon Feldman created this drama series, which starred:

  • Eliza Dushku as Tru Davies
  • Zach Galifianakis as Davis
  • Shawn Reaves as Harrison Davies
  • Jason Priestley as Jack Harper
  • A. J. Cook as Lindsay Walker
  • Jessica Collins as Meredith Davies
  • Benjamin Benitez as Gardez
  • Matthew Bomer as Luc Johnston
  • Cotter Smith as Richard Davies
  • Liz Vassey as Dr. Carrie Allen
  • Eric Christian Olsen as Jensen Ritchie

Tru Davies mother was murdered ten years ago. Tru witnessed the murder. Since then her family has fallen apart. Her brother was into gambling, and her sister, although very successful, was hooked on drugs. Tru just graduated from college and was planning on working on getting into medical school and passing the MCAT. She was supposed to have a position at a local hospital, but they lost the funding, so she went to work at the local morgue. She met Davis, and ends up working for him. On her first day, a body comes in and asks for help, the day rewinds, and she has to help them. It turns out her mother had the same gift.

The show was very well written and very well put together in the beginning. The gimmick for the show was the rewind. Watch the show and see that rewind.

It was very well performed. All the characters were very well cast. You know that Tru's goal is to become a doctor. The one little problem they did have at the beginning is, if Tru wants to become a doctor how is she suppose to do this if she has a special gift where the days rewind and she helps save dead people. When they got to the second season, it appeared as if they wanted Tru to follow her dream. They also gave her a nemesis - Jack Harper played by Jason Priestley.

When they created the nemesis, they created some problems. Jack Harper, who also relives days, is suppose to make sure these people who ask for help die in the end. This is what fate had in store for them, and it is not suppose to change. This character sort of questions whether or not people should be saved at all. Meanwhile in one episode, they have Tru Davies save Jensen Ritchie played by Eric Christian Olsen and he does not even ask for her help. This alone makes the character seem a bit more reckless because they can almost decide who lives and who dies.

Harrison Davies, although he needs help and gets it from his sister Tru, he always stands by her. He assists Tru in her quest at times to save lives. He does it because he believes in his sister.

To make matters worse, Richard Davies played by Cotter Smith at one time in his life did the same thing that Jack Harper did, and he was married to Tru's mother who did what she did. You begin to wonder how could Tru's mother marry Richard and have three kids. Richard Davies made a remark to Jack Harper in the show at one point and he said the words "he made sure he won."

They bring in Liz Vassey to play the shrink Dr. Carrie Allen at the morgue. You learn later in the story that she is a mole put there by Jack Harper. She has a romantic interest in Davis. In the last episode, he tells her about Tru reliving days and Tru does not even know she knows.

To go one-step further off the information we are given in the storyline, if Tru has the gift her mother had, should not one of the other siblings have the same gift has their father? You know that Tru has two siblings.

The last scene in the 26th episode everyone is at Tru's home for Christmas. She even invites Jack so that he does not have to spend Christmas Eve alone. Jack shakes hands with Richard Davies like they have just met, and they are both lying because they both know each other. Davis told Tru's secret to the mole, Carrie Allen. Jensen Richie, who Tru saved, is supposed to belong to Jack Harper at some point they hint. It is just sad. Except for a few people, it feels like Tru is sharing Christmas Eve in her home with a bunch of backstabbers. How could the storyline continue? Tru Davies would soon trust no one. They pitted themselves to storyline hell.
