The Lucy Years

On Lucille Ball's career, inspired by a book called The Bittersweet Life of Lucy.

When Lucy started out, one might say she had to go through the glamour period before she could be of any substance. Even then there must have been a storehouse of comic material ready to burst forward. In fact in the mid-forties, just as she was at the height of that glamour period, CBS began to notice that she had terrific comic talent they would soon want see on television. Little did they know that here would be a head besides the body that would manage her own half-hour comedy show as well as produce others. She would be a favorite figure in homes across the world especially during the early to mid fifties and the same time others would question her patriotism because granddad had wanted his granddaughter to follow his socialist past.

The "I Love Lucy" show made two couples quite famous over the commonplace ideal of marriage. She would be the first woman to combine zany talent on the television screen and remain an icon despite old reports that surfaced regarded an early communist part membership. The American public was forgiving because of her wholesomeness and her ability to bring reality to viewers all over. She even went as far as to orchestrate the birth of her son, to co-incident with news of her son's birth while the program was running. That birth was even more popular than the nomination of Eisenhower. The program would go strong until the late fifties when she would opt out not because if being tired but because she wanted to use creative energy elsewhere. By that time her program had been worth millions and when she organized an annual comedy show, the cost was several hundred thousand dollars.
